Does anyone know how I can make this safe for my children?

My Nan bought me an absolutely beautiful, solid wooden toy box. (well, I guess it was for my kids hehe) It was quite expensive, so I didn’t want her to think I was being ungrateful if I showed anything but extreme gratitude, so I didn’t say anything at the time. But I am worried that the lid slams shut, it doesn’t have any sort of safety catch or a pressure lever thing that makes the lid go down slowly. the lid is also solid wood, with leather, so it is quite heavy, especially when it slams closed.
Do you know of something I can buy from a hardware shop or similar, that I can install myself to make sure the lid doesn’t slam shut? Or please tell me what it is I will need? thanks

We had the same issue- great toy old wooden toy box given as a gift that WAS NOT safe. We installed a hinge that prevents it from falling or slamming. When it’s open, it stays open, and you have to push on it to close it now. Any hardware store or walmart will have it, and it’s not expensive or difficult to install.
